Inter and Milan’s new San Siro will become ‘the most beautiful stadium in the world’, according to the Rossoneri’s president Paolo Scaroni.
The clubs submitted a 750-page document known as a ‘Technical and Economic Feasibility Study’ to the city council yesterday, marking the first step towards building a new stadium.
The new San Siro would have a capacity of 60,000-65,000 seats while the entire project, which also includes the idea to build a multifunctional district adjacent to the ground, would create 3,5000 jobs and cost a total of €1.2 billion.
“Our project is about creating a new hub for the city of Milan,” Inter’s corporate chief executive Alessandro Antonello said.
Milan CEO Ivan Gazidis described their plans as ‘a big challenge’ but claimed they would benefit the entire Italian football movement.
Numerous politicians and supporters have voiced their opposition to the idea of knocking down the existing San Siro, though, including city mayor Giuseppe Sala.
Sala helped Milan and Cortino d’Ampezzo win the rights to host the 2026 Winter Olympics and is adamant the stadium will hold the opening ceremony in its current guise.
Inter and Milan will not take no for an answer as far as building a new stadium is concerned, with the clubs reportedly having identified three alternative locations if the council reject their proposal.
