Antonio Conte celebrated his 50th birthday this morning by getting back down to work with Inter in preseason.
The Nerazzurri began preparing for their penultimate friendly of the summer, which pits them against Tottenham in the International Champions Cup on Sunday.
Conte began his playing career more than 30 years ago at Lecce and his long journey has now brought him to Appiano Gentile.
“A lot of things have happened between now and then, all of which involved a football,” Gazzetta recalled this morning.
“He once told us: ‘How did I first start playing football? It was my Dad’s doing. He was the owner of an historic club in my home city, Juventina Lecce, where he did a bit of everything. I grew up with bread and football.”
Conte enjoyed unlimited success with Juventus as a player before helping them set a new record-breaking points total of 102 in Serie A five years ago.
He then shocked the Bianconeri’s supporters by resigning on the eve of the 2014-15 season, writing in his goodbye letter: ‘Winning is difficult and requires you to struggle a lot, especially at Juve’.
His next challenge was to take charge of the Italian national team, earning himself a big-money salary but also the burden of restoring pride among Azzurri fans.
Having taken Italy to the quarter-finals at Euro 2016, he then moved to Chelsea in the Premier League, where he received fierce criticism but also secured a league and FA Cup title.
“‘This is a new chapter in my life’, Conte said on 31 May when he joined Inter,” Gazzetta concluded.
“As a 50-year-old, it promises to be an even more interesting chapter.”
