Edinson Cavani would be a better signing for Inter than Romelu Lukaku, the club’s former midfielder Bruno Bolchi claimed last night.

Antonio Conte has made no secret of his desire to prize Lukaku away from Manchester United, but the Belgian seems destined to join Juventus instead.

Cavani appears to have emerged as Inter’s most credible alternative, but Bolchi would have preferred them to go after El Matador anyway.

Bolchi, who made 109 appearances for Inter during the 1950s and 1960s, told TuttoMercatoWeb: “Cavani would be a great signing for Inter. He’s getting on a bit but he seems to still be fit and in my opinion he’s better than Lukaku.

“Inter would need to verify his physical condition because he expends a lot of energy while playing, but he’d be a good acquisition.”

Edin Dzeko is of a similar age to Cavani but Bolchi insisted the Nerazzurri could no longer afford to be picky with their transfer targets.

He added: “At this stage they just need to sign someone. It’s not too long until the season starts and Inter are short up front. They can’t wait any longer.”

Bolchi said it was impossible to pass judgment on Antonio Conte’s new-look side from preseason friendlies, reminding listeners how Inter had played their matches without much preparation beforehand.

He then made a bold claim about the Nerazzurri’s defence, however, describing it as ‘one of the strongest in the world’.

“It’ll be difficult for everyone to score against Inter now,” Bolchi concluded.

“Their midfield is valid after signing two great prospects in Stefano Sensi and Nicolo Barella, but now they need to sign goal-scorers in attack.”
