Napoli have made Mauro Icardi their main transfer target and are in talks with Inter over the forward, according to Corriere dello Sport.

Aurelio De Laurentiis wanted to sign either Nicolas Pepe or James Rodriguez for the Partenopei, but neither deal has come to fruition.

Beppe Marotta is in frequent contact with Napoli’s owner while their sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has made progress with Wanda Nara.

“These negotiations will take time because everyone is obviously protecting their own interests,” the Rome-based paper explained this morning.

“Inter want €80 million for their centre-forward, while Napoli are aware of the uncomfortable position he is in and therefore the need to sell him.

“De Laurentiis is not in a hurry to close a deal because he already has a good team. Everything has a price but it needs to be reasonable, not least because Icardi’s contract demands will not be simple to meet.”

Napoli will spend the coming days and weeks staying in contact with Inter, attempting to slowly lower their asking price and peak Icardi’s curiosity for life at the San Paolo.

The Azzurri’s supporters have enjoyed love affairs with various Argentine players down the years and they are now hoping Maurito can become the latest.
