Antonio Conte Already Improving Inter’s Team Spirit & Quality Of Football

Antonio Conte’s hard work at Inter this summer is already bearing its first fruits, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Nerazzurri got their new Serie A campaign off to the perfect start on Monday as they beat Lecce 4-0 at San Siro.

Gazzetta said ‘the Conte Effect’ was well and truly visible and identified a series of changes that were already taking place.

Conte was praised for creating a greater unity of intent in the dressing room, as well as improving the quality of Inter’s football and affecting a clear stylistic change from Luciano Spalletti’s tenure.

“It might seem obvious, but the sense of a collective which Conte has transferred to his group is important,” GdS reported.

“We saw a few signs of this on Monday, such as the group celebrations after Inter scored, Romelu Lukaku’s desire to seek out Sebastiano Esposito – the youngest member of the squad – and the rebirth of someone like Antonio Candreva, who hadn’t started a league game at San Siro since February.”

Inter’s players have been won over by Conte’s methodology and track record, with various members of the dressing room reported as saying: “I’d do anything for him.”

But Conte has also made impressive progress in terms of the football Inter are playing, with Gazzetta citing Lukaku as fundamental to this transformation.

“He’s the striker Mauro Icardi couldn’t be, and we’re not talking about goals here but characteristics,” they continued.

“Inter’s desire to shoot from distance is a clear input from Conte, as is the desire to build play intelligently from the back without taking undue risks. But Stefano Sensi and Marcelo Brozovic’s partnership is perhaps the most pleasant surprise we’ve seen.”

Conte has evolved the 4-2-4 system he used earlier in his coaching career into a 3-5-2 formation as, in his words, it enables his sides to attack in greater numbers.

Inter succeeded in maintaining their balance against Lecce, but they will need to test this phase of their game against more robust opposition who do not let them have so much of the ball.

Conte has discarded Spalletti’s ‘tiki taka’ style of play in favour of a far more direct brand of football, which aims to turn defence into attack as quickly as possible.

GdS warned Inter’s physical condition will be key to ensuring they can keep playing such an energetic type of football throughout the season.

The paper said the Nerazzurri needed to improve their fitness levels, which prevented them on Monday from playing well constantly and pressing Lecce more effectively.

They also advised Conte to work on fine-tuning Inter’s defensive movements, which were described as ‘not optimal’.
