Inter’s huge attendance for their Serie A opener against Lecce has helped the league secure a new record for average attendances, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Nerazzurri walked out at San Siro on Monday in front of 64,188 supporters, by far the biggest crowd anywhere in Italy last weekend.
Serie A’s fixtures registered an average attendance of 26,140 in week one, a record figure for the opening round of a league season since they moved to 20 teams in the 2004-05 campaign.
Roma’s match at home to Genoa recorded an attendance of 38,779, with Fiorentina vs Napoli also on the podium with 33,614.
Italy’s top flight has not enjoyed an average attendance over 26,000 for a round of fixtures in August since 2009, when the Milan derby and Roma’s clash with Juventus helped increase numbers.
Inter have consistently topped Serie A’s rankings for attendance figures in recent years and look set to stay at the summit in the 2019-20 campaign, following the arrival of Antonio Conte as head coach.
