Javier Zanetti is confident Inter can reach the last 16 of this season’s Champions League despite another tough group stage draw.
Antonio Conte’s side will play Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Slavia Prague in Group F, with the first match at home to the Czech side at San Siro on 17 September.
The Nerazzurri came close to reaching the knockout stage last year, only for Tottenham to pip them courtesy of goals scored.
“We want to have a go against everyone, we’re aware we have a lot to give,” Zanetti told Sky Sport in Monaco.
“We’re only at the start. Let’s first try and reach the last 16 and then another competition starts.
“Our target for the tournament? Conte has brought a strong mentality, you know how he lives football and you saw it in the match against Lecce.”
On the prospect of facing Barcelona for the second season running, Inter’s vice-president added: “We know what their potential is but we’ll be competing with them and the other two sides.
“Let’s hope we can prepare as best we can to arrive at these matches in a good condition.”
Zanetti was then asked for an update on Mauro Icardi’s future and aligned himself with the rest of Inter’s management.
“The club have expressed their view and the situation hasn’t changed,” Pupi assured.
“Let’s wait until the end of the transfer window and then we’ll see if we can find a solution which suits everyone. You know what the club’s position is.
“We’re going to keep trying to improve the squad and then we’ll look for the best solution on this matter.”
Zanetti also confirmed Inter had not taken a decision yet on whether Icardi would be left out of Conte’s Champions League squad list.
“We’ll make those decisions after the transfer window closes,” he concluded.
“Our team is built to become a top side again, this is why we chose Conte and explains the group that we’re building.”
