Mauro Icardi moved a step closer to being reintegrated into Inter’s first team yesterday after the striker took part in a practice match during training.
Corriere dello Sport reported he was involved in every session on Wednesday, suggesting the letter his entourage sent to the club two weeks ago – asking for Antonio Conte to treat him like every other player – had borne at least some fruit.
Icardi’s future remains distant from Inter, with president Steven Zhang inviting him earlier this week to find another club before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Maurito is still refusing to budge, however, leading him to ignore persistent interest from Napoli and Juventus.
Inter will continue to let Icardi train with the first team in order to avoid the risk of legal action, both in the short and long term.
The Argentine was included in Conte’s 25-man Serie A squad last week for a similar reason, although he will still be left out of the Champions League list.
Icardi will again be excluded from Inter’s match-day squad on Sunday when they travel to play Cagliari at the Sardegna Arena.
CdS reported it will be up to Conte from now on to decide, on an almost case-by-case basis, whether the striker should take part in the Nerazzurri’s technical and tactical drills in training.
Inter will ensure Icardi appears in at least 10% of their competitive fixtures this season by giving him cameo roles in the Coppa Italia and at the end of the campaign.
If they don’t, Icardi can apply to have his contract terminated prematurely under Article 15 of FIFA’s regulations on transfers for so-called ‘established’ players.
The paper warned this might not be enough to keep Icardi happy, although they added it would depend on whether he was chasing full reintegration or the termination of his contract.
In any case, the 26-year-old is thought to want the same treatment Juventus are reserving for Paulo Dybala, who was nearly sold earlier in August but remains within the first-team fold.
