Roberto Mancini is confident Antonio Conte can help Inter take the fight to Juventus in Serie A this season.

The Nerazzurri got their league campaign off to the perfect start on Monday, recording a convincing 4-0 win at home to newly-promoted Lecce.

Mancini won three league titles with Inter during his first spell in charge and envisaged them battling for the Scudetto again this year.

He told Tuttosport: “Inter have strengthened since last season, but so have the others.

“I still think Juventus are ahead of the rest, then I’d put Napoli and Inter immediately on their heels. Conte’s work will certainly bear fruit, though.”

Mancini admitted Inter were going against their recent history by building up a block of Italian players in their first-team squad.

But the Italy boss seemed pleased to see Cristiano Birghi return to the club after a seven-year absence.

“I didn’t expect Fiorentina to let Biraghi leave because they always believe a lot in young Italians,” he said.

“It’s very important to have a lot of homegrown players in your squad.”
