Javier Zanetti is confident Inter’s tough Champions League group could turn out to be a positive for the Nerazzurri.
Antonio Conte’s side were drawn alongside Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Slavia Prague in a similar group to the one they received last year.
But Zanetti believes the difficult fixtures ahead will help Conte and his staff discover what his squad are truly made of.
He told Sport Mediaset: “I think it’s a demanding group, but for the stage of development our team is at, as we begin a new era, a group like this is welcome because it will help us discover our true value.
“We know how strong Barcelona are but we’re good enough to give them a test. Conte has brought enthusiasm and a new mentality, transferring the way in which he lives football to all his players.
“We’re happy to have chosen him as head coach. Let’s hope we can be big players again in all the competitions Inter play in.”
Zanetti was also asked about Mauro Icardi’s future at the club and reiterated Inter’s position has not changed.
“We expressed our view a few days ago and you know the club’s position,” he added.
“Let’s wait until the end of the transfer window and then we’ll work out what solution we need to find. At the moment we’re looking for something which suits all parties.”
