Gazzetta dello Sport have examined what they describe as Lautaro Martinez’s new role as a leader at Inter, after two great performances in Inter’s past two matches.
“From one season to the next the world of Lautaro has turned upside down, something normal for a 22-year-old boy who had to spend the first season looking at others and being ready,” the report begins.
“The duel with his friend Mauro Icardi has kept him in the shadows for several months, but when things turned sour between the club and Icardi, Lautaro became the first option.
“Under Spalletti he made three appearances in the Champions League – all of which as a substitute – but its the opposite under Conte. Now he rests the day before the Champions League games in order to be 100%. He is also now starting for the Argentine national team.
“He will also be able to get a feeling for Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park – where Inter will play in the coming weeks – over the international break with Argentine set to take on Germany there.
It concludes: “He has also managed to end his goal drought at San Siro as he scored in the Derby D’Italia. Prior to this match, he had not scored at San Siro since March and before that it was January. This is a sign of his quality. Lautaro’s new life is one of a leader.”
