Inter Manager Conte: “A Deserved Victory, Barella Had An Excellent Game”

Inter manager Antonio Conte spoke with Italian broadcaster Rai Sport soon after the full time whistle was blown at San Siro as Inter ran out 2-1 victors over fellow Serie A side Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia quarter finals.

The Nerazzurri struggled to get into the game initially with the visitors having the better of the early chances but Inter would take the lead through wing back Antonio Candreva just before half time.

Inter started the second half in promising fashion but could not make the most of their chances. Fiorentina then got themselves back into the game through Martin Caceres but the parity between the sides was short lived as Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella fired home from range to put Inter back ahead.

Conte, who has been in charge of Inter for little over six months now, firstly gave his overall reflection of the match.

“I think it is a deserved victory. We are happy, now we will play in the semi finals. We want to go as far as possible in all competitions because we want to gain experience and improve.”

He then spoke on the current lack of options available to him in the midfield.

“We have to recover some players. We had some problems in the midfield and were forced to play Eriksen, who showed a lot of personality and raises our overall quality. I hope to recover some midfielders because we are in a bit of difficulty.”

Next he was asked about the possibility of new recruit Christian Eriksen being deployed at striker.

“It is difficult for this to happen, even if he is a versatile player and is very intelligent, he knows how to place himself in the right areas of the field. The more he works with us, the more he will get used to our ideas.

“Today I played with an attacking midfielder and two strikers due to the unavailability of Stefano Sensi and Borja Valero which forced us to put aside the methods that we have used for months. When you improvise, you just have to hope that things go well.”

He then heaped praise on Barella.

“Nicolo is growing, because he, like Sensi, needed to play and get used to things again. Today he had an excellent game both in the midfield and in front of the defence.

“He is intelligent, has strength and energy, and he can score goals from the outside the box. Now he has to continue on these levels and get back to the level he was at before his injury.”

He concluded by speaking on whether he would use the 3-4-1-2 system again in the future after the success of the system against La Viola.

“It was a forced choice because we only had two midfielders available. It may be an option in the future but we have to work on it.”
