Inter Manager Conte: “I’m Happy With The Desire & Commitment The Boys Have Shown, Eriksen Raises The Level Of Our Midfield”

Inter manager Antonio Conte spoke with official club broadcaster Inter TV immediately after he watched his side beat Fiorentina 2-1 in the Coppa Italia quarter final last night at San Siro.

Conte firstly explained that he was forced to change from his tried and tested 3-5-2 system to a 3-4-2-1 for the match due to injuries in the midfield which left him very short on numbers.

“Was the change in system due to injuries? Yes, because we had a few problems in the middle of the field. Sensi had a minor calf problem whilst Borja Valero had a thigh problem.

“You could see that everything was not fine but I am happy nevertheless with the desire and the commitment that the boys have shown. There are plenty positives to take and we deserve this satisfaction.”

He then spoke on what he made of Christian Eriksen’s first appearance in an Inter shirt.

“It was a positive performance. He only trained with us for the first time on Tuesday. I catapulted him onto the field and usually I never do this kind of thing because players have to understand where he is and then he can play but there was a need to put him on.

“I know he is an intelligent player and he knows how to put himself in the right positions. We have to work from here to Sunday. He showed what I already knew about him, given that I have faced him several times in England. He brings great experience and personality and he raises the level of our midfield.”

He concluded by speaking about how the team defend.

“We managed to press excellently. We were good, even if there was a lack of concentration at the corner kick [that they scored from]. We will prepare for the match in Udine, which will be tough and demanding.

“I must also point out that for the second game running Young played with personality. Moses and Eriksen also played and I definitely see a lot of positives.”

Following the victory over La Viola, which came with thanks to goals from Antonio Candreva in the first half and Nicolo Barella in the second half, Inter must ready themselves for a semi final double header with fellow Serie A side Napoli.

The first leg of the semi final matches will be played on February 12 and the return leg will take place on March 4 with the winner to face either AC Milan or Juventus in the final at the Stadio Olimpico on May 13.
