Tottenham coach José Mourinho spoke to gathered reporters in a press conference yesterday about the transfer of Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen to Inter and his attempts to convince the player to sign a contract renewal. His words were noted by Italian media outlet FcInterNews.
“We knew he would leave for a long time, we didn’t say anything because we had a moral agreement with Eriksen, but from the first day I arrived he told me that he wouldn’t sign the renewal.”
The 57-year-old Portuguese coach then spoke about how he tried to convince Eriksen to sign a new contract.
“I tried to convince him, but he told me he had already made his decision and there was no way to persuade him.”
Mourinho touched on how he began building the squad without accounting for the Dane.
“From that moment on I started building the team without him. This is also the reason for some of his exclusions. At the same time Eriksen is an excellent professional who has respect for the club and his teammates, until the last day he helped the team with a positive attitude inside the dressing room.”
Finally, Mourinho spoke about Eriksen’s eventual sale to Inter.
“Mister Levy then managed to get an important amount of money that was used to buy a 21-year-old player like Steven Bergwijn. So, Mister Levy also did a fantastic thing for the club.”
Eriksen joined the Nerazzurri earlier this week on a four-and-a-half-year deal. The 27-year-old made his Inter debut against Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia a day after signing the deal, coming on as a substitute. He is already a popular figure within the club, with his shirt rising to become the top seller on Inter’s official web store. Eriksen scored 69 goals and provided 89 assists in 305 appearances for Spurs.
