Inter Manager Antonio Conte: “We Deserved Something More Against Napoli”

Having carried out some interviews with media outlets, Inter manager Antonio Conte addressed the gathered media in his post-match press conference following Inter’s 1-0 loss to Napoli in the first leg of their two legged Coppa Italia semi final at San Siro last night.

The former Italian national team manager was firstly questioned on why, for a period of the game, he had the team play in a 4-2-3-1 formation, a formation he has not previously tried the team with since taking charge in the Summer.

“It was something we tried in order to try and create some superiority against Napoli, who had shut up shop. Remember that Napoli are a team who have beaten Liverpool in the Champions League in addition to Juventus and Lazio in the league. Gattusso was good at convincing his players to defend as they did. Having said that, I think we deserved something more,” Conte explained to the gathered journalists in the press room at San Siro.

He was then asked if it was a technical or tactical decision to start January transfer window recruit Christian Eriksen from the bench for the match against the Partenopei.

“I knew about some of the difficulties that could have come up in the match, so I preferred to focus on Sensi who knows how to act both in possession and out of possession. From a physical point of view, he [Eriksen] is still regaining his fitness.”

In conclusion he was asked whether he thinks it will be his side or Napoli who reach the Coppa Italia final in May against either AC Milan or Juventus.

“This was only the first leg, based off of this result, Napoli are the favourites. We are talking about a strong team but there is a return leg to play and we will try and play our cards right in Naples.”
