Former Inter midfielder Cristiano Zanetti thinks criticism of Juventus Coach Maurizio Sarri is unfair, but expects the title race to go to the wire.
The 42-year-old played for both clubs, winning the Scudetto and two Coppe Italia with the Nerazzurri before helping Juve win promotion from Serie B in the wake of the Calciopoli scandal.
His two former teams are level on points at the top of the table, with Inter taking on third-placed Lazio on Sunday night after the Bianconeri face Brescia.
While the Old Lady has won the last eight league titles in a row and are joint-top with a head-to-head advantage over the Nerazzurri, they’ve won only one of their last four in all competitions.
That’s put pressure on Sarri, with some reports even stating he could be replaced by Max Allegri.
“He’s top of the table, fighting for the Champions League and in the semi-final of the Coppa Italia,” Zanetti pointed out in an interview with TuttoMercatoWeb.
“It makes me laugh. Let’s wait for something to really go wrong before pointing any fingers.
“Clearly you need players with certain characteristics to go along with the Coach’s ideas, to play his style of play Sarri needs a certain type of players but that’s not to say Juve are playing bad football.
“Maybe their not as sparkling as that of [Sarri’s] Napoli, and if you notice they’re conceding too many goals – even if with Ronaldo you always start 1-0 up.
“It’s a balanced league and Lazio can have their say. The Biancocelesti aren’t in the cup competitions and that could be an advantage.
“Juve and Inter have excellent squads and it’ll be a fight to the end.
“That’s a great new thing compared to the last few years.”
