A top Italian academic has tried to ease people’s concerns regarding how Coronavirus could affect sporting events by insisting stadiums are one of the safer places to be.
In the past few days there has been an outbreak of the virus in several Italian towns which has led to them being placed in lock down in order to limit the potential spread.
The virus is understood to have infected around 150 people across Italy and the virus has disrupted several activities in the country too with sporting events among them.
This past weekend, four Serie A matches in Inter vs Sampdoria, Atalanta vs Sassuolo, Hellas Verona vs Cagliari and Torino vs Parma, were postponed and further games are at threat of postponement or at the very least being played behind closed doors.
Inter’s upcoming matches with Ludogorets in the Europa League and Juventus and Serie A both seem to be at threat with reports suggesting both games will be played behind closed doors.
“It is safer to be at an open stadium rather than indoor sports halls or a crowded subway car or a regional train full of commuters or at nightclub where you can dance side by side,” Fabrizio Pregliasco, virologist at the University of Milan and head physician at the Galeazzi Hospital, explained to Gazzetta dello Sport.
