Respected Italian football journalist Mario Sconcerti has shared his belief that playing games behind closed doors is the only option amid the Coronavirus outbreak.
Figures published today state that there are now 215 confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Italy, the third most of any country worldwide behind China and South Korea.
The outbreak of the virus has led to several towns being placed on lock down and it has caused major disruption to several events in the days since the outbreak started.
Sporting events up and down the country have been postponed, including four Serie A matches this past weekend, whilst Venice’s famous carnival has also been cut short.
Several reports in the media have suggested that for the foreseeable future events such as football matches could take place behind closed doors in a bid to limit the potential spread of the virus, which has killed four people in Italy.
“I fear that the virus emergency is almost unmanageable for football. Postponing the matches is technically impossible three months before the end of the season as there is no time to play postponed games,” he said in an interview with CalcioMerato.com.
“I believe that the only possible solution is to play the games behind closed doors, without the fans.”
