Napoli attacker Dries Mertens’ future continues to hang in the balance according to a report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 32-year-old, who recently became Napoli’s all time joint top goalscorer, has just a few months remaining on his contract with the Stadio San Paolo club, who he has played for since the Summer of 2013 following a move from PSV Eindhoven.
Napoli manager Gennaro Gattuso would like for Mertens to be given a contract extension and is pleading with club president and owner Aurelio De Laurentiis to meet the player’s demands.
As per the report, Napoli have tabled him a two year contract extension with an annual salary of €4.2 million but it falls almost a million short of the Belgian’s demands with him understood to want €5 million a year.
Due to his expiring contract status, several clubs, including Inter are understood to be monitoring his situation and are seemingly ready to swoop in in the event that terms cannot be agreed between Mertens and Napoli.
