Inter manager Antonio Conte spoke with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia immediately after Inter’s 2-1 win at home to Ludogorets to share his thoughts on the game.
Inter found themselves surprisingly fall behind at San Siro as Cauly grabbed an unlikely opener for the visitors but Inter reacted quickly and were back on level terms minutes later thanks to Cristiano Biraghi. Romelu Lukaku then scored just before half time to put Inter ahead.
He started by discussing how it felt to play the game behind closed doors as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak in the country.
“I’d already played behind closed doors with Italy against Croatia. It’s certainly a strange atmosphere and it can feel almost like a training session at first, which is a dangerous attitude, but the lads got the game back on track,” he began.
Conte then went on to discuss the four man defence that he tried at times throughout the match at San Siro, something he has also done in recent weeks.
“We need to work on the ideas and have time in training. The postponement of the game with Sampdoria last week gave us time to test out something new, which can be used either at the start of a match or during the 90 minutes.
“When you have two strikers, it’s inevitably harder work for the midfielders. For those who play with one centre-forward, two wingers or a trequartista, there are more players ready to help cover defensively. We always need to find the right balance depending on the characteristics of the opponents we are up against.”
Next he was asked how the team are heading into this weekend’s Derby D’Italia away to his former employers Juventus.
“We have started this cycle of games and have already had demanding matches. On Sunday there will be another important match.
“I have already said that at the end of this cycle we will understand how far we are from winning. I am convinced this will give us more clarity on where we are now, the length of the road ahead of us and the work that still needs to be done.”
Conte was then quizzed on whether Inter can realistically target winning the Europa League.
“It’s only right that a team like Inter go into any tournament trying to achieve the best result. It’s been nine years and a few months since Inter last took home any silverware, but the club has tradition and high ambitions.
“We will try to do our best, knowing victory doesn’t come from one moment to the next. It’s easy to say, we’ll win this, that and the other, but those who have won, they know how tough it is and the steps that are necessary to reach that point.”
