Dries Mertens will miss Napoli’s Serie A match this weekend at home to Torino due to injury according to a report in today’s print edition of Tuttosport.
The 32-year-old Belgian national team attacker took a knock to his ankle during Napoli’s 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the Champions League and tests conducted by the club’s medical staff confirmed he had sustained an ankle injury and his condition would need reassessed at a later date.
Napoli manager Gennaro Gattuso does not wish to rush Mertens back for the game against the Granata as he would like to have the former PSV Eindhoven man in top condition for next week’s Coppa Italia semi-final second leg against Inter.
The report from the Turin based newspaper goes on to detail that Mertens has been doing gym work and underwent the necessary treatments to get back as soon as possible yesterday in training.
This season Mertens has scored 12 goals in 28 appearances across all competitions.
