Inter CEO Beppe Marotta: “Decision To Postpone Matches Was Taken Without Consulting The Clubs”

Inter CEO Beppe Marotta spoke about the postponed games and how it affects the Nerazzurri, as well as other teams in the league, in an interview with Italian radio station Radio Sportiva earlier today.

“As a citizen, I too feel I recognise the great emergency that our country is going through and the great problems that come with it. Health must be protected, but the decision to postpone the games of this game day comes all of a sudden and creates an imbalance between the teams.”

Marotta touched on the problems created by postponing the five games to the 13th May.

“We feel damaged by a sudden, reckless decision, taken without the clubs being consulted through an emergency meeting.

“This is something fundamental for the credibility of the Italian football system and last week’s decree provided for the use of playing behind closed doors.

“The problem is only that of Serie A because the calendar is very tight, while the other leagues have more freedom. The competitive balance is affected by this decision.”

He spoke about the fact that the League changed their mind in the space of 48 hours.

“What has changed from Friday to Saturday? The Minister of Sport says that he has left the decisions to the football authority, Lega Serie A, so no diktat. Today we are going to address this issue, which is creating problems for several clubs at an organisational level.”

The 62-year-old Italian spoke about how some teams could benefit from the postponed games.

“When there are winners and losers there is always a situation that you can’t see well. The important thing is to understand why this rash decision has come about. There are a lot of other clubs in a bad mood, there are interests at stake, even those of the fans. We are in a great emergency situation, we still don’t know what will happen next week. Today we have to face the postponements of this game day, to resolve the situation next week and perhaps face the problems in the following rounds.”

Marotta touched on what work he will be doing today.

“We shall bear all our blame for what has happened and we will try to call an emergency meeting as soon as possible to deal with this situation. Football is a social phenomenon of great importance, it must be protected.”

The Inter CEO revealed that the Nerazzurri have no interest in forcing Lega Serie A president Paolo Dal Pino to resign.

“That’s not our goal, Italy doesn’t improve by asking someone to resign. You have to have the competence to deal with certain situations. Inter were damaged by the postponements, and in May we’ll have a long run of games.”

Finally, Marotta spoke about the upcoming game against Sassuolo.

“Against Sassuolo we absolutely expect to play at the San Siro with the doors open. On the other hand, if this game day has seen many games be postponed, I think it’s right to postpone the next one too.”

Five Serie A games this weekend were postponed to the 13th May, due to fears around the spread of the Coronavirus. Italy is the most affected country in Europe by the disease, and so the government are working hard to ensure the safety of the general public.
