Inter CEO Beppe Marotta discussed the postponement of Inter’s league clash against Juventus as well as the argument between him and Lega Serie A president Paolo Del Pino in an interview on the TV show ’90 Minuto’, hosted by Italian broadcaster Rai.
“Today we had this council that was summoned on the basis of a request from Inter. It is right that the communication from the League brings the contents of the council. I speak for Inter and I’m very concerned about the situation following the decision taken yesterday, which is sudden because it doesn’t take into account the current situation in the league. In protecting Inter’s interests I also protect those of the other teams and the Italian league.”
The Nerazzurri executive briefly detailed the situation that occurred over the last seven days.
“On Monday the government asked the FIGC and Coni to use the closed doors in light of the Ministry’s decision which precluded any form of competitive activity. On Thursday the calendar of matches was set to be played behind closed doors, on Saturday suddenly there was an unprecedented turnaround with the assembly, which brought unease to the clubs concerned and competitive imbalance within Serie A.”
Finally, Marotta spoke about how there is now an imbalance in the league thanks to the inconsistent postponing of the games. Lazio are eight points ahead of Inter at the top of the table, but have played two more games.
“You find teams that haven’t played for two weeks, others that play continuously. The league in this way becomes staggered in its calendar and takes on the dimensions of an unexpected and unpredictable imbalance.”
Inter’s league clash against Juventus was one of the five Serie A games postponed by the League this weekend, with the games now set to be played on the 13th May. That day was originally going to be the day of the Coppa Italia final, but now that game will have to be moved back a week. The final will also have to be played in Milan, as UEFA need the Stadio Olimpico from 20th May onwards for the European Championships.
