Inter CEO Beppe Marotta spoke to Italian news agency ANSA yesterday, discussing his fight against Lega Serie A president Paolo Dal Pino and the postponed Serie A games.
“As a citizen, I feel I recognise the country’s moment of emergency and the resulting problems, health protection is the priority. We received an informal and random hypothesis from Lega Serie A’s Luigi De Siervo to play on Monday evening that we didn’t even want to consider because we consider it impractical and almost provocative, with respect to Inter and millions of Nerazzurri fans as well as football fans in general.”
He gave three reasons why the Nerazzurri didn’t consider playing the game against Juventus tomorrow evening.
“We considered this proposal inadmissible for three reasons, firstly because it would have gone against the logic of protecting public health, assuming in fact that the Coronavirus alert would have disappeared in 48 hours. Secondly, because the stadium would have been open only to Juventus fans, with all the controversy that would have ensued, without the presence of our fans, which would have resulted in an unacceptable disparity. The third, because the postponement of Juve v Inter to Monday would also have meant moving the Juve v Milan Coppa Italia to Thursday, the same day as Napoli v Inter.”
Inter were furious about the decision to postpone the five Serie A games, as they have now missed two game days in the league. As a result of this, the Nerazzurri sit eight points behind league leaders Lazio, who haven’t had a game postponed yet. The current date set for their Derby d’Italia clash against the Bianconeri is the 13th May, the date originally set for the Coppa Italia final.
The final will now have to be pushed back a week to the 20th May, forcing the venue to be changed to the San Siro, as UEFA need the Stadio Olimpico from the 20th May onwards in order to prepare for the upcoming European Championships.
