Napoli are working to lock down Belgian striker Dries Mertens on a new two-year contract, with only a small detail blocking the signature, according to a report from Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia earlier today.
The report details how the Naples based club have offered the 32-year-old Belgian striker, whose current contract expires at the end of the season, a new two-year contract worth around €4.5 million net per season. The problem blocking the signature isn’t related to the fees, as Mertens has accepted the proposal, but instead on the signing bonuses that Mertens wants inserted.
The distance between Napoli and Mertens is about €2 million, the report continues, but the two parties are working to bridge the gap as quickly as possible. Mertens has made 29 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 1787 minutes. In that time, he’s scored 12 goals and provided six assists, matching the top scorer record set by Marek Hamšík for goals scored for Napoli, 121.
