Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta has revealed that he is against the idea of the remainder of the 2019/20 Serie A season being decided by play-offs at both ends of the table.
Last week it was announced that the Serie A season would get back underway on June 20, which will be little over three months since the last Serie A game was played.
Fears that the season may need to be brought to a halt again in the event of a second wave of Coronavirus in Italy remain and it has been suggested that if the season needs to be stopped, things could be decided by play-offs.
“We are absolutely against any alternative solution that is not finishing the season or taking the table as it is,” Marotta began an interview with Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, which appeared in today’s print edition.
“If the season cannot be finished, it is because the epidemic will have started again, and then I don’t see how playoffs can be played.
“While the algorithm is not a solution, how can you consider the “unpredictable” which is the basis of football? It would be better to consider the table up to that point.”
The idea of play-offs is not the only thing Marotta is opposed to with reports in the past few days stating he is opposed to the dates provided for the remainder of the Coppa Italia to be carried out. He is so opposed in fact that he has reportedly threatened to field the youth team.
