Mayor of Milan Beppe Sala spoke to Milannews on the derby and the San Siro: “The international character of our city is also reflected in sport. I invite everyone not to see the Chinese owners of Inter or Milan as a threat but as an opportunity for growth and comparison. I’ve gotten to know Suning’s Mr Zhang: his project for Inter is indeed ambitious, but also highly practical. And this can only be a stimulus. As for Milan soon I hope to get to know the new owners to understand what their strategies are. It is certainly not easy to get used to matches of such high importance at lunchtime instead of prime time. Let us remember, though, that we are faced with two teams with international profiles. It will affect the teams of Milan, to the point of wanting to watch live as well as foreign-owned. We can only be happy that on the other side of the world they want to watch one of biggest games in Italian football. I hope that both can conquer Europe and represent the best qualities of the two clubs and our city.”

On the San Siro Sala added: “Owning a stadium is an important goal for all the big clubs. It has been discussed in the past and for both Inter and Milan. At the moment, however, I believe the way forward is that of the current structure of sharing. My idea of “San Siro for two” is a highly characterised plant for both clubs, with exclusive outdoor spaces one for each side. My idea is to modernise the San Siro, to make the stadium closer to the needs of clubs and fan clubs. We can certainly see the different options available the two teams.”

He concluded with a prediction for the game: “As for a prediction…Inter 2-1.”
