Inter manager Luciano Spalletti discussed the ongoing rumours linking club captain Mauro Icardi with a move away from the club this summer with reporters at an event in Perugia last night.
“I’m a Coach who speaks to the sporting director Piero Ausilio every week. He tells me how things have gone, then there are some things which are done that don’t depend on us. When we left [the event] we were planning for a probable future where Mauro is wearing the number 9 shirt. Next season he’ll score many more goals than last season, so finding another player to do what he’s done wouldn’t be easy. But if someone comes, pays what they have to pay, and the player wants to go, what I think becomes redundant.”
Spalletti also reviewed the season just gone by.
“The lads showed a maturity which surprised me, I got a lot from them and learned a lot. I brought an idea and they followed me, they answered me in a positive way even during that long difficult period. They were always steady, never giving an inch to opponents.”
He concluded by admitting that Inter are still a little bit away from being able to challenge for the Scudetto.
“The Scudetto? It’s an impulse that the Press has to make it like a trampoline, we’re on an upward trajectory but we have to be practical. We’re still several steps behind the top teams, Juventus and Napoli. We’ve narrowed the gap to Roma a bit, but Juventus and Napoli are two very strong teams.”
