Inter have everything they need to upset the odds and challenge Juventus for the Scudetto this season, according to Gazzetta dello Sport’s Luigi Garlando.

The Nerazzurri finished some 23 points adrift of Max Allegri’s side last season but have impressed everyone with their business during the summer transfer window, which saw them bring in seven new faces and keep hold of all of their key players.

During his editorial in Saturday’s paper, Garlando made the case for Luciano Spalletti’s side to become serious title contenders alongside the Bianconeri this season, as well as drawing a comparison between Inter and Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup winners Atletico Madrid.

“Nobody here in our newsroom has any doubts over the fact that Inter will be Juventus’s principal rivals this season,” he wrote.

“Real Madrid were heavy favourites to win the Super Cup but they ended up succumbing to Atletico Madrid’s solidity. Inter, with fewer stars and less quality than Juventus, are counting on their Simeone-esque spirit to upset the odds.

“They have a top goalkeeper, a watertight defence that now also includes De Vrij and great physicality in midfield. Luka Modric aside Spalletti has been given everything he asked for this summer, starting with a goal-scoring midfielder and a forward that reduced the team’s dependence on Icardi.

“Lautaro Martinez’s exciting summer has earned him a place in the starting XI and made him our readers’ tip as the surprise of the season.

“The enthusiasm amongst the fans, an established style of play and Spalletti’s safe hands justify putting them second at the start of the campaign.”
