A discussion between Spalletti, management (Ausilio and Gardini) and the team was held yesterday at Appiano Gentile, in an attempt to reassess the objective for this season. The message was made loud and clear, stop talking about the Scudetto, the goal remains to finish in the top four. This was done in an attempt to keep the players feet on the ground, after taking only 1 point from the first two games.
Gazzetta dello Sport describes the scene: “The players and coaching staff found themselves in the gym, but it was a psychological session, rather than a physical one. Spalletti spoke for forty minutes, far longer than he usually does at the first training session after a game. He didn’t even use video footage to highlight their mistakes, that will be done either today or tomorrow. He used the time to strongly highlight the difference between the first and second half, demanding to know why the real Inter disappeared. The team were questioned on four different accounts, firstly, a lack of hunger, a lack of personality, poor game management and the inability to react to the first goal, similarly to what happened against Sassuolo.”
Some could argue that is was due to tactical confusion, in regards to the swicth from a 4-2-3-1 and the new 3-4-2-1. However, by using D’Ambrosio at the third centre back, it allows the team to switch between the two and this is what Spalletti wants. So, it seems like Spalletti will continue with this formation, as he wants the team to learn how to better read the game, thanks to the plethora of multipurpose players.
Speaking of players, it seems like the wait to see Radja Nainggolan is finally over. He is a player who can guarantee a level-head and personality, so it’s no coincidence that he was made the flagship of the transfer market. The Ninja is back to normal training and Spalletti could of even used him against Torino, but we can be sure that he will start against Bologna on Saturday and play at least sixty minutes. The Belgian is the ideal man to demonstrate Spalletti’s philosophy and teach the team.
