Samir Handanovic is currently the best goalkeeper in Serie A but could soon be surpassed by Napoli’s Alex Meret, according to the Partneopei’s former striker Andrea Carnevale.
The Slovenian has received plenty of criticism from Inter fans in recent months but heads into Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina hopeful of repeating last season’s heroics, when he pulled off a string of miraculous saves in the Nerazzurri’s fixtures against Milan.
However Carnevale, who also had spells with Roma and Udinese and currently works as a director for the Friulian club, believes Meret is destined to become even better.
“It’s incredible how unlucky Meret has been with injuries,” the 57 year-old told Gazzetta dello Sport on Thursday.
“Nonetheless, he will become a top goalkeeper soon – I’ve always admired him ever since he was playing in Udinese’s youth teams. Just like I’ve always admired Simone Scuffet.
“I think Handanovic is the best keeper in Italy but Meret will overtake him eventually.”
