Borja Valero spoke on the big news that multi-time world player of the year Lionel Messi will miss tonight’s match between Inter and Barcelona in the Champions League through injury.
“It is better for us that Messi is missing for Barcelona because he is a unique player. As a Madridista, Barcelona remains the eternal rival for me so it gives me some extra motivation for the match. Is Icardi our Messi? I would not say that is the case,” he said in an interview with El Pais.
The veteran has seen limited action this term but stressed that as long as he can help the team out when he gets chances he is happy.
“I do not care about the lack of minutes, I care about helping the team. Getting angry with the coach because you play little does not lead to anything good. The coach knows me and knows what I can give and I’m very happy with my physical shape at the moment. Spalletti is a temperament coach who wants to keep everything under control, he wants me to get up the pitch while also being structured in the defence.”
He concluded by speaking on what kind of game he is expecting.
“This evening could be tough for us as we could have little possession because of their style of play. It will be necessary to put pressure on them and recover the ball as quickly as possible.”
