Inter Legend Dejan Stankovic: “Inter Can Beat Barcelona”

Ahead of tonight’s Champions League match between Barcelona and Inter former Inter midfielder Dejan Stankovic has recalled the last time the sides clashed eight years ago.

“In the first leg I got booked and was suspended for the second leg. It was difficult for me to watch my teammates fighting like lions and not being able to help them. We won 3-1 on aggregate, it was a spectacular tie. When we faced them in the group stage, it was hell because we kept chasing the ball and that was it. When we met in the semi-final though we arrived with a different attitude and took care of every detail.”

The Serbian then tried to draw comparisons between the triplete winning side and the side of today.

“I would like to say that last Friday when I saw the training at Pinetina, I saw beautiful things. I saw 22 players concentrated, Spalletti and the directors were preparing for the match just like we did in the old days. There is something from the 2010 team about this team.”

Comparisons have been made by Diego Milito and Mauro Icardi but Stankovic doesn’t think they can be compared.

“Icardi is Icardi, Diego is Diego: we can not compare them them. We were over 30 and on the last train to win the Champions League. We were a group and our strength was the cohesion and the compactness of it. You must always be hungry, dream and try to win during your career. Maurito is growing. He still has a beautiful road ahead of him, he can improve a lot even if he is already strong.”

Stankovic then spoke on tonight’s game between Barcelona and Inter.

“Playing at Camp Nou is not impossible. I also hear that there will be changes and this is important. I have confidence in Inter. The players who play will be ready. Again, tonight is not impossible looking at the teams, Inter can do it. I believe in Inter and they must approach the game right as the stadium and opponent are awkward.”

He then spoke on triplete manager Jose Mourinho’s gesture toward Juventus fans in the Champions League last night wherein he raised three fingers in their direction following chants against him.

“I immediately understood the reference, it was a sign for triplete. I know Jose and it’s a normal reaction from him. He’s fighting like a lion in Manchester. He’s struggling, I see him in difficulty but I know he will not give up.”

Stankovic then concluded by reflecting upon his time with the Nerazzurri.

“I am proud of having played in Inter’s shirt. I still feel the affection of the fans. I will never stop thanking the Moratti family. I had 10 unforgettable years at Inter.
