Fernandez: “FFP Prevented Inter From Keeping Rafinha, They Wanted To Keep Him”

Former Barcelona sporting director Roberto Fernandez has revealed only financial fair play stopped Inter from signing Rafinha on a permanent basis following a successful loan spell at the club.

“When talking about Rafinha we are talking about a good player. When Luis Enrique was the manager at the club we wanted to protect Rafinha by renewing his contract and he was very happy about this but then suffered that serious injury,” Fernandez explained in an interview with Spanish newspaper Cadena Ser Catalunya.

“Inter wanted to exercise the option to turn the move permanent after having had him on a loan basis but did not have the financial means to do so due to having to respect the financial fair play constraints they were under.”

Having been unable to honour the previous agreement, it is alleged that Inter made some attempts to get a deal over the line for a lesser price but Barcelona were not happy so no deal came to fruition.
