One of football’s great traditions involves the release of club jerseys: In the modern day, kits are produced every year and merchandising is a big driver of vital funding. In time, certain jerseys become iconic and are more sought after than others.
That’s certainly the case with Inter Milan who have seen some stunning designs produced over the years. The common theme of classic blue and black stripes is evident in most but somehow, certain shirts stand out more than most. Here are our own top 5:
Home Shirt 1995/96
The stripes are familiar and so, in many respects is the sponsor. In an age where sports sponsorship can be a fickle business, the Pirelli brand has been loyal to Inter for over 20 years.
The 1995/96 season was the first time that the two partners came together so the home kit from that campaign is something of an icon. The classic blue and black combination is here from an era which featured Roberto Carlos, Javier Zanetti, Gianluca Festa and more.
Home Shirt 2009/10
An unforgettable season is marked by another home classic. The Inter of 2009/10 won the Champions League, Serie A and the Coppa Italia in a memorable treble that is remembered fondly around the world.
The previous shirt had seen a change to two black stripes on the front but this was a departure that was less than popular. For 2009/10, Javier Zanetti, Mario Balotelli, Wesley Sneijder and other great names were back in a three-striped iconic shirt that climbed the steps to claim three major trophies.
Away Shirt 2010/11
Our first away shirt is, at first glance, just a plain white affair but the angry grass snake on the sleeve is the addition that makes this design really stand out. The serpent is none other than Il Biscione, a Milanese symbol of legend that helped to bond the club with the city during this season.
The squad was packed with legends too although the likes of Wesley Sneijder and Samuel Eto’o were coming to the end of their careers at the San Siro. Their names, and the shirt, live on in Inter folklore, largely due to Il Biscione’s influence.
Away Shirt 2007/08
Legends of the city of Milan are also recognised in the away shirt of 2007/08 which features the giant red cross of St Ambrose. Of all the away jerseys in the modern era, many of which were plain white. It’s that huge emblem that makes this one really stand out from the bunch.
It was a special year on the pitch too with another Serie A title and this was the season that the great Zlatan Ibrahimovic shone as the club’s leading scorer – another reason why this shirt is such a big seller.
Home Shirt 2018/19
The current season’s kit brings us right up to date and it’s back to the classic blue and black stripes of the Nerazzurri.
As the club looks to bring the glory days back, the new jersey is selling well among loyal fans and hopefully it will mark another season to remember at Inter.
