The idea of football for Inter striker Mauro Icardi is as clear as it is simple: “The attacker must score goals, the defender must protect the goal and the goalkeeper has to make saves” the Argentinian striker began in a long interview in Corriere dello Sport.

The attacker must score goals, let us start from there. After a few months of training Mancini told me that “If Mauro also could play football he would be an absolute phenomenon.” I never understood if that was a joke or an actual statement?

“I think that I can come far with scoring goals, in this sport it is what counts, preferably one more than your opponent. But there are those that speak for you, and do it great, like your wife Wanda

“Wanda knows very well what she says and does, and also knows what people wants from her. She knows how to behave in TV, she knows journalists and now she has entered the fashion world, a world that she has always loved. Wanda is a smart girl that does not need any control, I trust her completely. She knows me well and she knows how much I care of our privacy and from that how far she can go.”

During the period when a lot of people talked about you being able to play for the Italian national team you were very loyal to Argentina, something that I appreciated a lot

“I have not even thought about it for a moment and that is not due to disrespect or a lack of gratitude towards Italy, a country that has given me so much. I feel profoundly Argentinian although my family left when I was young.”

In a team there are some players that have a greater impact, that is a fact. Have you ever asked the President or Ausilio for reinforcement. I know that Mancini once did that as a player

“Never, at most I could ask Messi for some help in the Champions League. It is true that we depend on Barcelona, but we have to worry about PSV. Barcelona always play to win, let us hope this continues.”

28 points, right behind Napoli but far away from Juventus. Knock-out stage in the Champions League within reach, is this the Inter you imagined?

“The team is more complete now compared to before. Ok, we lost a few games in the beginning and in the first two or three games we lost some points in our away games. If we would have played like Inter we would have had a couple of points more. Then, when we thought we had found some continuity we had that pitfall in Bergamo. Nothing to say about that, they were better than us.”

Have you ever thought of leaving?

“This is something for them to say indicating Ausilio. I have always been clear with my objectives: the first was to bring Inter back to the Champions League, now we are there. The second one is to win something with Inter, management has done a good job forming such a good team without even spending any money.”

The game at Olimpico is a crucial one for you guys , but also for Roma

“We will try to play a good game, because we know that if we make a mistake Juventus will move even further away as will Napoli.”

Last summer Juventus tried to sign you?

“I heard something like that, but you have to understand that I am the last person to know because I only focus on one thing and that is to do my job well. You have to ask Wanda and Piero about these things. To be able to play football is the most beautiful thing and a privilege, the job I dreamed of. I came back from London at 6 in the morning and immediately took an ice-cold bath in order to heal my hematoma on the quadriceps. I want to recover quickly and get back to play immediately.”

They say that you are Lautaro’s nurse?

“I have helped him a lot, I took him everywhere because he did not know anyone. He is 21 years old and can still grow and when he is on the pitch he gives everything, he is used to Argentinian football where the play is tough and you get hit a lot. From that point of view the VAR is a blessing for us attackers since it limits the defenders in being nasty. Before anything could happen in the area, now the game is cleaner.”

During your time with Inter you have also experienced moments of unpopularity in the curve. I remember the one following the release of your book. Writing an autobiography at the age of 23?

“It was not an autobiography, I simply told about the beginning of my journey, a piece of my history and as far as the break with the curve is concerned, I think it healed after the episode at Sassuolo. If there are problems you talk about them, whenever I meet fans I do not feel any coldness, actually the opposite.”

Can you hear the calls from Real Madrid from afar?

“I do not think it is the right time, given the results right now. Plus I am doing fine where I am now even the renewal will come when it is time, and there is still time.”
