Matteo Politano will be up against his own past this evening when he steps out to face Roma at the Stadio Olimpico, as Gazzetta dello Sport wrote on Sunday.
Politano spent eight years in the Giallorossi’s youth sector and was part of the side that clinched the Primavera Scudetto title during the 2010-11 season, before lifting the Coppa Italia the following season.
However instead of bringing him into the first-team set-up after graduating the club sent the Italian on loan spells to Perugia and Pescara in Serie B, before selling him to Sassuolo in 2015.
“Tonight is the night Matteo can put his past behind him once and for all, with a smile and without resentment,” the Milanese publication said.
“And perhaps he can do so by scoring a goal to punish Roma for letting him go.
“Politano almost knocked Inter out of the race for the Champions League in May when he scored a free-kick at San Siro, but fate can be like that sometimes: it enjoys playing with your emotions.
“At the moment he’s irreplaceable for Luciano Spalletti and is the only player to have appeared in all of Inter’s matches this season.”
