Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta has shared his disappointment at last night’s VAR ruling that gave Fiorentina a controversial penalty deep into injury time.

Fiorentina – through Jordan Veretout – duly converted the spot kick which had a significant impact on the end result. It turned what looked set to be a 3-2 win for Inter into a 3-3 draw instead.

“We suffered significant harm last night,” he said on the sidelines of the Facchetti awards ceremony.

“We hope that it’s not irreparable in terms of the league standings. Let’s hope that it’s not fatal at the end of the season.

“A lot has been invested in VAR in a bid to reduce errors. It should be used rationally. When faced with a situation like this, where objectivity is confused with subjectivity, I remain stunned and disappointed by the effort made to introduce it.

“The incident took place at the end of the game, therefore, it was irreparable. I’m not the one to condemn the referee but it’s clear that the whole system needs to work better

“It is an unbelievable decision,” he continued.

“We can talk and talk about protocol, although my main regret is that such a massive mistake has been made even with this objective tool that’s available. It’s the biggest error since the introduction of VAR.”

Marotta was also quizzed on Matteo Politano’s celebration last night wherein he cupped his ears like Mauro Icardi does, a celebration seen by some as a sign of support and others as a sign of mockery.

“Leave the conspiracies out of it. Politano was only celebrating.”

He then praised the Inter team for their performance.

“I have to express my gratitude to the team for their performance. We have seen an excellent Inter who played very well, and that was the important thing. That is what we wanted.”

He concluded by dismissing a question on Mauro Icardi.

“We’ve discussed him a lot and there’s been a broad debate. However, it’s time to stop.”
