Inter Have No Designated Penalty Taker Without Icardi

Inter do not have a designated penalty taker in Mauro Icardi’s absence with five players sharing responsibility, as Corriere dello Sport wrote on Saturday.

Lautaro Martinez and Ivan Perisic have both scored from the spot since Icardi was stripped of the captaincy and disappeared from first-team action on 13 February.

However, Marcelo Brozovic stepped up in Thursday’s Europa League last 16 tie against Eintracht Frankfurt and saw his effort saved by Kevin Trapp, missing the chance to secure a crucial away goal ahead of the second leg.

Luciano Spalletti has nominated a group of five players to take penalties while Icardi is out of the team, with the final decision ultimately left to them on the pitch.

Matteo Politano and Radja Nainggolan are the other two members of the group alongside Brozovic, Perisic and Martinez.

Martinez was reportedly earmarked as Inter’s back-up option on Thursday but the Argentine is said to have a patchy record when taking penalties in training.

Icardi has scored 21 of his 25 penalties since joining Inter in 2013.
