Tasked with honouring relatively short odds against their respective nations winning the upcoming AFCON tournament, Inter’s current African contingent of Keita Baldé (Senegal) and Kwadwo Asamoah (Ghana) remain subject to mixed opinion.
However, with Nigerian prospect Victor Osimhen (of Charleroi) being named as a potential long-term replacement for Mauro Icardi, it seems as though the powers at Inter still have some interest in African talent.
Asamoah was a focal player in the post-match analysis of Inter’s recent 2-0 win over SPAL
If those links are to bear fruit, then there is no doubt that Osimhen would have a difficult time establishing himself as a top Serie A striker in public eyes. Currently odds-on (at as much as 1/5) across all Serie A sportsbooks to finish as the league’s top scorer for 2018/19, Juventus’ Ronaldo continues to set the bar, despite his ‘advanced’ years.
However, sustained links to Osimhen, which first emerged in 2017, would at least make the upcoming (and newly-expanded) AFCON tournament all the more interesting for Inter fans.
The usual big names – such as Ghana, Senegal and Nigeria – will be amongst the favourites across all the most reputable sportsbooks offering AFCON odds this summer. However, there are a few other sides that could certainly spring some surprises along the way.
Morocco defender and one-time Juventus stalwart Medhi Benatia faces Inter and helps hold them to a 0-0 draw in Turin.
Morocco
Many a bookmaker’s favourite to win last year’s tournament, Morocco are formidable reigning champions. With a combination of young and established talent in the squad, Morocco represent an intriguing way for anyone to utilise a range of recommended free bets across sportsbooks that offer AFCON odds.
Old heads like Medhi Benatia provide coolness and composure, while exciting youngsters like Achraf Hakimi, Amine Harit, and Youssef Aït Bennasser offer a potent goal threat up front and in midfield.
Guinea
Despite one-time Inter target Naby Keita being part of a Liverpool squad priced at just 7/2 to win the Champions League, he has not lived up to expectation thus far since moving to Anfield. However his range of passing making him fair game for any Serie A outfit that (like Inter) can better accommodate his overall playing style.
Up front though, Francois Kamano is the MVP for club and country, and his blistering pace alone could inject new energy into the latter stages of any Serie A or European game, in turn exploiting a potentially-tiring opposition.
Kamano hits a double to sink Monaco back in August 2018.
Mali
Mali have become known for their almost-impenetrable defence, and the likes of Hamari Traore and Molla Wagué have proven to be very solid at the back. Plenty of Mali’s players are getting valuable experience in other top divisions around Europe, and enjoy a particularly strong presence in Ligue 1.
Up front, the team has a good array of talent but just needs one player to start scoring regularly and take them to the next level. Kalifa Coulibaly or Moussa Marega could be that player, with the latter man persistently linked to several Premier League and La Liga clubs in the past.
