Luciano Spalletti: “I Will Stay At Inter For The Next 100 Years Because It Is A Beautiful Club”

Inter coach Luciano Spalletti analyzed the 1-1 draw in the Serie A against Juventus at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milano’s San Siro district, in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia.

“A nice game where both teams wanted to win. In the first half we were looking for a second goal in order to get a margin that would enable us to play with less pressure. But we just couldn’t manage to get that second goal, at the same time, in the second half we couldn’t replicate our play from the first half where we moved the ball around well on their half. Then we lack the characteristics for defending well, many players don’t have the right attitude for defending well, at the same time they were technically well in finding the space to score goals.”

At a certain point it seemed like you were afraid of losing the game, hence being satisfied with the draw?

“We are not the kind of team that knows how to manage games. The defensive phase is not one of our strengths, so we play our game in order to reduce the risks, by pressing forward. Then I have to add that in the second half there was a lot of fatigue as well. We played the game like we had to do and if we continue to play like this we will be rewarded. We had a lot of opportunities.”

Now you are a group of 22-25 players where everybody rotates and each player make his contribution. A great goal is achieved. If you take away the first two teams, Inter is the team most likely to play in the Champions League next year.

“Yes, but we still need to improve. A top-team has to bring home the win from a game like tonight. All conditions were met and the team did well for most parts of the game, but then all of a sudden we are facing the risk of losing it. We have to be more mature, more balanced and accelerate, because this is how our football is. For example: Brozovic is better at constructing than destructing play, Politano is working hard in getting that second goal but in the end doesn’t manage to resolve the situation. And if the team you’re facing is Juventus, you know you will concede something.”

Is your position stronger than it was a couple of weeks ago?

“This is not a problem, this is something that the club decides upon. I will remain with Inter for the next 100 years because it is a beautiful club. Did you see and hear the crowd tonight? Inter should choose what is best for the club, and if that means me getting fired, so be it. Inter has to have persons that know how to decide and, above all, know how to defend Inter.”

When Radja scored his goal, you made a gesture as if to say ‘This is the Radja I wanted to have for the entire season.’ There are now 26 points separating you from Juventus, a Juventus that you put under a lot of pressure, both tonight as well as during the first leg. How much of the distance is due to their quality and how much is due to points lost in various games with sub-par performances?

“They have been super-strong, and we needed to something more. Some games we have left the points out on the pitch, like the period last year when we completely lost the type of football we want to play. That has costed us the points that are between us and Juventus. But this is a difficult championship in which there are teams that have made life hard for everyone. But I repeat: We could have done better.”
