Inter CEO Marotta Urges Conte Not To Join Roma

Inter chief executive Beppe Marotta has urged Antonio Conte not to join Roma as he tries to convince the Nerazzurri’s owners Suning to appoint the Italian, according to Repubblica.

Marotta met with Conte on Monday and remains keen on bringing him to San Siro, despite publicly backing current boss Luciano Spalletti earlier this week.

Suning chief Zhang Jindong would have to spend €80 million to fire Spalletti and appoint Conte, though, with the latter likely to request a three-year deal and wages around €16 million per season.

“Firing Spalletti would cost €28 million if you take his staff into consideration,” Repubblica reported today.

“Conte’s salary meanwhile would require Inter to spend €16 million, plus any expenses for his entourage.”

The paper said the growth in Inter’s annual turnover – currently at €400 million – has convinced Zhang to make the investment on Conte, although his Juventus past and Spalletti’s positive end to the season are two possible obstacles.

Should Conte be appointed the Nerazzurri could pursue Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku as a replacement for Mauro Icardi, while Paulo Dybala continues to be linked.

Inter continue to request €80 million for Icardi and a swap deal with his Argentina team-mate could be the solution which satisfies everyone.
