Andrea Pinamonti claimed he wanted to ‘shut rival supporters up’ after scoring a panenka penalty in Italy’s 1-0 win over hosts Poland in the last 16 of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Italy will face either Argentina or Mali in the quarter-finals thanks to the 19-year-old’s first-half strike, which was his second goal of the tournament after scoring against Ecuador in the group stage.

Pinamonti spent the 2018-19 season on loan at Frosinone and insisted his decision to chip the penalty down the middle was not a planned move.

“I hadn’t prepared anything,” he told reporters yesterday.

“Occasionally I take penalties like that in training to have a laugh and a joke with the goalkeepers, but that’s it.

“The crowd was booing and their goalkeeper was trying to put me off, so I took them on because I wanted to shut them all up, despite knowing the risk you run by taking a panenka.

“If you score you’re a genius whereas if you don’t you’ll annoy all your teammates and the fans, but it went well.”
