Inter stand virtually no chance of selling Mauro Icardi to Roma this summer despite reports last night the Giallorossi were interested in the forward.
Sky Sport broke the surprising news and reported it was Roma who had made an approach for the 26-year-old during the club’s negotiations over Edin Dzeko.
However, Gazzetta dello Sport today said it was Inter who offered Icardi to Roma in an attempt to start a bidding war and raise his price tag.
“Those close to Roma have let us know there are no talks in progress for Icardi,” the paper wrote.
“The Giallorossi thought about it when he was offered but they soon realised there was almost no chance it could happen, not least because of Icardi’s desire to stay at Inter.”
Among the reasons a deal is considered impossible are Roma’s modest wage bill, which would have to be completely restructured to pay Icardi the €7 million he would want, and the fact they cannot entice him with the prospect of Champions League football.
