Antonio Conte: “It’s Time Inter Competed To Win the Serie A Title Again”

Antonio Conte has promised Inter supporters he will do everything he can to ensure Inter compete for the Scudetto again next season.

Conte was officially appointed on a three-year deal by the Nerazzurri two weeks ago and gave his first interview as the club’s head coach to GQ Magazine last week.

The interview has now been released in full and reveals Conte was won over by Inter’s ambition when they met for talks.

“It’s been eight years since Inter fought for first place,” Conte said.

“Inter want to change this state of play and the way in which they’re moving proves their desire to compete. When I spoke with Steven Zhang I was struck by his determination, but Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio have very clear ideas too.

“Inter are an ambitious club where everyone is pulling in the same direction.”

Conte accepted he is under pressure to deliver results at Inter but seemed in no mood to temper the supporters’ expectations.

“The results I’ve achieved and most of all the speed at which I’ve obtained them have created a certain image of myself,” Conte explained.

“I create expectations. When I embark on a new adventure the club expects a lot from me. The players are confident they can improve while the supporters expect a lot of gratification.

“I can accept not having much chance to win things at the start – perhaps even only a 1% chance – but that possibility has to exist in some capacity.”

Conte also underlined the importance of Inter’s new CEO Beppe Marotta, with whom he spent three years at Juventus, in convincing him to join the Nerazzurri.

“He was confirmation of the impression I had about Inter from afar,” he added.

“If you seek out Marotta immediately after he’s left Juventus it shows you have very serious intentions. You aren’t leaving any stone unturned in your quest to reach the top.”
