Matias Vecino’s Copa America is over after just 83 minutes with Uruguay revealing the midfielder has suffered a thigh injury.
Vecino started last night’s Group C fixture in Belo Horizonte, which saw the Celeste begin their tournament with a comfortable 4-0 win over Ecuador, before being replaced by Federico Valverde.
Head coach Oscar Tabarez later confirmed the 27-year-old had been taken off after picking up a muscular injury and added he would undergo scans today.
The scans have shown Vecino will be unable to take any further part in this summer’s tournament, ending his 2018-19 season earlier than anticipated.
Vecino made 40 appearances in all competitions for Inter during the 2018-19 season, scoring five goals and creating five assists.
The midfielder’s finest moment of the campaign came during the 2-1 win over Tottenham in the Champions League group stage, securing an unlikely come-from-behind victory with a stoppage-time header.
Last night’s display was Vecino’s 34th appearance for Uruguay, during which time he has scored three goals for his country.
