Belgium’s head coach Roberto Martinez has used Inter defender Zinho Vanheusden as an example of why clubs should have more faith in their young players.
Vanheusden was a fixed starter for Standard Liege in the 2018-19 campaign before a knee injury ruled him out of the end-of-season playoffs.
Inter are expected to sell the 20-year-old on a permanent deal for €18-20 million in the coming days, with Xian Emmers also joining Standard on loan.
“Personally, I don’t think young Belgian players have the opportunities they deserve in the Jupiler Pro League,” Martinez told Het Laatste Nieuws.
“It’s even harder for those who play at centre-back than it is for others. Zinho is an exception, but normally Belgian clubs don’t play young defenders.
“Belgian clubs are great for forming players but there is still room for improvement.”
Standard remain favourites to sign Vanheusden but Sky Sport reported yesterday that Royal Antwerp were also interested.
