Inter were wise to put Mauro Icardi and Radja Nainggolan up for sale because they are more trouble than they’re worth, according to one former Milan and Juventus striker.

Jose Altafini praised Antonio Conte and Beppe Marotta for not tolerating the pair, who have been deemed surplus to requirements.

Both began preseason training in Switzerland on Monday, but neither will take part in tactical drills or friendly matches.

“Icardi and Nainggolan create discord and cause problems for their teammates,” Altafini told SNAI Sportnews yesterday.

“It’s time they learned their lesson, and it’s good for the young players in the squad as it will help them understand the importance of discipline.

“Icardi thinks he can do whatever he wants because he has his wife as an agent who criticises everyone. Nainggolan is another hothead though, who belongs to the same school as Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli.”

Conte spoke individually with both players during the first day of training, reiterating the club’s intention to offload them this summer.
