Inter’s failure to sign Romelu Lukaku will not be the first time Antonio Conte has missed out on the Belgian striker, as Corriere dello Sport explained this morning.
Conte was desperate to bring Lukaku to Chelsea in 2017 when he was in charge of the Blues, before Jose Mourinho swooped in and took him to Manchester United.
Lukaku is now set to ‘betray’ the coach he recently described as ‘the best in the world’ for a second time, with a move to Turin seemingly imminent.
“Once again it will be Lukaku who leaves Conte alone at the altar,” the paper wrote.
“The pair have always admired each other from afar, but Juventus are Juventus and the opportunity to play with Cristiano Ronaldo is very tempting. Especially if the alternative is staying at United, a perennial work in progress since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure six years ago.”
Lukaku has passed from Mino Raiola to Federico Pastorello, who is on very good terms with Inter, since ditching Conte for the first time two years ago.
Not even that was enough to ensure a happier outcome on this occasion, though, as Juve and United continue their talks for the former Everton man and Paulo Dybala.
