Antonio Conte was ironically encouraged to reconsider Gabriel Barbosa’s position at Inter today as the club desperately look for strikers on the transfer market.
Tuttosport made it clear the former Santos man had no more than a 0.1% chance of wearing the Nerazzurri’s colours again.
However, they highlighted the curious state of affairs which sees Inter ignoring the most in-form centre-forward they have on their books.
Since returning to Brazil in 2018, Gabigol has rediscovered the form which saw him followed by various top European clubs three summers ago.
Inter, having just been taken over by Suning, signed the 20-year-old for €33 million from Santos, but soon came to regret the deal when he scored just once in nine appearances all season.
Gabigol spent six unsuccessful months on loan at Benfica in 2017 before returning to Santos the following January, where he scored 27 goals in all competitions and finished the 2018 Brasileirao season as the league’s top scorer.
The striker then moved on a twelve-month loan to Flamengo in January, with whom he has since found the net on 22 occasions.
Flamengo are due to keep the striker until 31 December, but Inter want to recall Gabigol so they can resell him in Europe this summer.
The Nerazzurri have promised Flamengo a 5% cut of any fee if they cut their loan deal short, but that will only be scant consolation for them given the form the striker has found.
Gabigol is worth €15 million on Inter’s books and has received interest from several clubs across the continent.
However, he would want an annual salary worth more than €4 million, a raise on his current €3.5 million salary, and this appears to be discouraging every club which comes forward.
